CHERRY CREEK STATE PARK (May 14, 2005)

Our "shakedown" camp for 2005 was at Cherry Creek State Park.  This park is about a 25 minute drive from Castle Rock.  Like last year at Chatfield, our first camp of the year is nearby by so we can verify all systems are functioning before we camp far from civilization.

The weekend weather was beautiful.  Highs both days were in the mid 70's with lots of sun and no wind.  We were in the Pioneer Loop, site #65.  It was nice to have so much grass surrounding the sites.  Most campsites are full hookups and all are level.

Cherry Creek Reservoir is the main attraction at the park.  It is a little strange to have a beach with office buildings and mountains all in the same photograph.

Kendal built a cool "sand fort".  Here are the kids hanging at the beach.  There's Carly, too.  It is hard to get light to reflect off Carly.  Even in direct sunlight, all you can see is the outline of a dog and a pink tongue!

We did not bring our swimming suits (it does still drop into the 40s at night), but that did not stop Kendal and Courtney from venturing into the swimming area of the lake.

Here is Carly working on her doggy paddle.  She was surprisingly eager to enter the water, especially if there were ducks or geese swimming nearby.

After swimming with your clothes on, what is the logical next thing to do?  Get buried in sand!  Melea helps Kendal and Courtney cover themselves with sand.  Cameron, the smart one, decided to play in the playground instead.

Here is Randy hanging out in the shade.

Seems not a camping trip goes by that a nearby kiddo walks into our site and makes instant friends with one of our kids.  The little girl next to Courtney is Kamryn.  They shared rides on Courtney's bike, and Kamryn even ate lunch with us on Saturday.

On Saturday night, Ron (at left, aka Parker Outbacker) stopped by the campsite to visit with Randy (at right, aka Castle Rock Outbackers).  Ron and Randy met online at Outbackers.com.   Both families sat around the campfire and talked until sundown.  Randy and Ron are modeling the cool Outbackers.com hats that can be purchased here
