SAN ISABEL NATIONAL FOREST - MOLLY BROWN (July 29, 2006) |

|
I booked site 6 at Molly Brown. It is the most sought-after site in
the campground due to its proximity to Turquoise Lake, the size of the lot,
and the amazing views. This site was the best dry site we have camped
on in the last three years. The Turquoise Lake Recreation Area is
located just outside Leadville, CO which is the highest incorporated city in
North America at 10,152 feet in elevation.

Here is site 6 from
the side. Our Porta-Bote fit nicely between the screen room and the
fire pit, with the motor on a sawhorse under the rear bedroom slideout.

To get the family
powered up for Porta-Boting, Dad whipped up a sausage, egg, potato and
peppers skillet breakfast cooked on the Outback's outside cooktop.
This smelled up the nearby campsites nicely.

Mom and the kids
start the process of assembling the Porta-Bote. It takes about 10
minutes start to finish.

With the lake to
ourselves at 9AM, we cruised around the lake enjoying the views.

This trip on our
Bote was different from all the others. This time Dad didn't have to
be the human motor.

|
That's right,
straight from New Hampshire and purchased on EBay, we now had the power of a
5.5 HP outboard. We ran out of gas once, but we expected that since
Dad only filled a half gallon into the tank. We also learned where the
carburetor adjustment screw was for going really FAST. While cruising
the lake we ran into some other Porta-Boters who asked what sized motor we
had. We were going quite a bit faster then they were.

The kids wanted to
cruise way over into the canal between those two mountains. I was
afraid we'd run out of gas as soon as we got there and I would have to row
us back. I promised next time with double the fuel onboard we'd make
the trip.

Carly is an expert
boter as well. On one of our hikes we ran into some campers that had a
Schipperke too! Her name was Sara-Lee and she looked just like Carly.
The two ladies were nice to each other and probably wondered why that other
doggie looked so familiar.

|
Dad and Cameron
dropped the girls off at the campsite and took a short cruise together.

|
We spent Saturday
afternoon being tourists in Leadville. We stopped by
Hundley's Fudge
and purchased three pounds of five different kids of fudge. If you
think you have had good fudge, you haven't, unless you've had Hundley's.
Order some online...they ship!

Just taking a guess
here, but there once was a building next to this one.. What a great trip we had to Molly Brown. We will be back next Summer when site 6 becomes available again.
