PIKE NATIONAL FOREST - RIVERSIDE (September 18, 2004)

Our second trip during September 2004 was to Riverside Campground in the Pike National Forest.  Like our last trip to Kelsey, Riverside is a dry campground (no water, no electric, no sewer).  Riverside is located near the town of Lake George, which is west on US 24 past Divide and Florissant.

We were in site 11.  There are only 8 RV sites at Riverside so it is a really small campground.  There are 11 other sites for tent campers only.  Site 11 was very nice, and probably our favorite after looking at all the other sites.

Riverside is located off County Road 96 in Park County.  The roads are dirt and very bumpy, so the dust left by cars driving by to go fishing was the only drawback to camping at Riverside.  And, as you can see, all the sites have no shade.  However, the views around the campground were beautiful.  Site 11 was very level and long which made setting up camp easy, even in the dark (we arrived a little after dark).

The kids enjoyed exploring Riverside on their bikes.  This is the first trip that Courtney brought her bike along as well.

What is the number one thing to do at Riverside?  FISHING!  The South Platte River runs along County Road 96, so we fished both days, Saturday and Sunday.

There are big rocks to sit on while fishing.

There is Cameron perched atop a river rock hoping to catch a big trout.  Unfortunately, nothing was biting for us.  We tried both night-crawlers and lures, but no luck.  The rules are catch-and-release anyway, but the kids are still waiting to catch their first fish on a camping trip.  I guess we'll try again in 2005.

Here is Daddy doing some fishing in with Courtney's Barbie Fishing Pole.  I'm sure the fish were laughing.

Daddy made Courtney laugh by teasing her with a worm. "Open your mouth, Courtney!"

After a long and tiring day fishing and catching nothing but fish poop, we had a great dinner in the camper.  Daddy grilled Kielbasa over charcoal and Lea made mac-n-cheese and steamed broccoli.  We had Boston Cream Pie for dessert.
