SAN ISABEL NATIONAL FOREST - SILVER DOLLAR (August 20, 2005) |
|
|
We ventured to the Leadville, CO area (elevation ~10,000
feet) at the suggestion of a co-worker and another
Outbacker. We
chose Silver Dollar for our first trip to this area. There are several
campgrounds around Turquoise Lake. The best sites at Silver Dollar are
37 (the one we chose for this trip), plus 40 and 24. The ideal sites
at nearby Father Dyer are 26, 25, and 23. The Mollie Brown campground
has several sites that are very close to the lake, and sites 4 and 6 are
incredible, with sites 14 and 16 honorable mentions for size and ease of
entry.

The family hates doing these "road sign" pictures since they are on
display by passing cars. Yes, I feel a little like Clark W. Griswold
when taking photos like this ("Gee, can you tell we aren't from around here?"),
but something inside makes me stop every time and say, "Kids, road sign
photo!"

Turquoise Lake was beautiful. Here the kids get
some fishing in while a storm approaches in the background. We have
visited so many lakes recently that we are considering purchasing a canoe.
Are those made for five people and a dog?

Incredible photo opportunity as clouds roll in over
Turquoise lake.

The temperature drops quickly when the sun disappears at
10,000 feet in elevation. We made it back to the campsite before
getting rained on.

And it seems like yesterday she was crawling around the
house getting into the Tupperware in the kitchen cabinets.

Court poses with her cool Barbie fishing pole. I
don't know what she would do if she actually caught a bite. |

Dad and Cameron work on baiting a fishing line. We
tried new lures on this trip and still no fish. They must know we are
coming. |

Melea took this great picture of Carly. We love our
little Schipperke!

We explored downtown Leadville on both Saturday and
Sunday. We even returned to the same store two days in a row to
purchase more fudge. They had over 40 kinds and it was the best I ever
tasted (and nobody loves fudge like I do). They also claim it will
remain soft and moist (when stored airtight) for nearly a month (like it
will not be eaten in less than a week anyway). Order
here and have
some shipped to you.

A buddy of mine told me to cover my kids eyes and ears
and walk into this establishment. While that sounded tempting, I just
took a picture instead. Maybe another day. Our trip to Silver
Dollar was wonderful, and we will be back next year for sure. Ok,
maybe in September of this year, too.
