STILLWATER / LAKE GRANBY (August 6, 2005)

We booked Stillwater Campground on Lake Granby for the first weekend in August.  We had a "premium" lakeside site (#89) but premium doesn't always mean electric included.  We were surprised to find this a dry site.  No worries, we managed fine.

Site 89 is a double-wide and is very level.  Water is available right there but without a hose outlet.  Randy had to make short trips with our 6-gallon water tanks to fills the Outback tanks.  Next time we'll get water at the dump station first.  We ran the furnace both nights and still had over 1/3 batter power on our last day.

This is site 89's back yard.  The kids enjoyed the easy walk to the lakeshore to cool off and skip rocks.

To get to Lake Granby we drove over Berthoud Pass which crosses the Continental Divide.  Look at that elevation!  The temperature dropped to the high 50's at that altitude.

We encountered some bears on our trip that looked vaguely familiar.

We were not certain, but the bear on the right really looked like our puppy Carly.

On Saturday we visited Rocky Mountain National Park.  What a beautiful place it is.  Be prepared for a $20 entrance fee (which is good for 7 days).

We completed a 4-mile hike along the Colorado River Trail.  The kids did great.  Dogs are not permitted on the trails, but we were not going to leave Carly in the car.

We drove to Grand Lake after having lunch at RMNP and rented some boats.  Dad, Mom, Courtney and Carly paddled a canoe around the lake.  It was surprisingly easy to maneuver.  Carly wanted off (see Mom holding her in the boat?)

Cameron and Kendal opted for a pedal boat, a choice they will never make again, especially after a 4-mile hike.  They had fun, but their legs were really tired after our 1-hour tour of Grand Lake.

On Sunday we rented a Pontoon boat and went fishing on Lake Granby.  Here are the kiddos waiting for bites.  We caught nothing, but being on the boat was fun anyway.

Here is Kendal driving the boat.

Cameron drove the boat as well and did a good job.

Even Courtney took her turn at the wheel.  Dad stayed close to insure we avoided any mountains.

Carly had her chance in the driver's seat as well.  Mom helped out a little.

Our trip to Lake Granby was one of our most memorable.  The kids loved cruising the lake on a boat.  We will be back.

We took this photograph while cruising on Lake Granby.
